The park get its name from an alternate spelling of the Lakota phrase maco sica meaning “bad earth”. Nothing bad about this landscape of grassy plateaus, rugged canyons, fluted hillsides, pinnacles and caprocks. Juniper and sage add some green color against the soft rock colors of beige, coral, gray and brown. We are nestled into a tiny valley campground. Most of our neighbors have left so we have the place to ourselves!
